CANADIAN APAS
compiled by Garth Spencer

Back in the early 80's I started trying to find out what-all apas, in fact what-all fan activities in general, were operating in Canada. APA, as you probably know, means Amateur Press/ Publication Association. You may not know that "OE" or "CM" means the person who receives, collates, and mails out the contribs; that "minac" means the minimum contribution, in pages and frequency, expected of members; that "dues" or "account" refer to monies you pay the OE to support the mailing of the apa.

You may also not know that apas generally wander off the focus initially announced for the whole shebang.

Some of the following titles date back to 1984, with updates as noted, but I still think the enclosed list is probably out of date and incomplete. A couple of articles on the background and history of Canadian apas appeared in /Opuntia/, a Calgary fanzine, in 1995. The following just serves as a starting point for investigation.

Much of the following is drawn from Eric Watt's New Moon Directory (July 1995), with updates and corrections as necessary. "As listed in NMD" means I took the address and point-form description from NMD, not verbatim.

GALACTUS: & HALF REMEMBERED DREAMS: Pukka T. (Vancouver, B.C.?)

DEAD:
APA Turnover: I gather this was one of the zines founded by the McCullough brothers in the late 70s/early 80s. I think many of them folded when one of them moved to California.

BONDAPA:
this McCullough apa died, probably sometime in the late 80s.

CANADAPA:
this nation-wide apa, founded by Vaughn Fraser while he was in Ontario, died in 1984.

CASPERAPA:
CASPERAPA was founded in 1986 to exchange news and views between Canadian fans interested in the Canadian SF and Fantasy Awards (then called the "Caspers"). CASPERAPA folded, apparently after 1987.

THE FINAL FRONTIER:
this McCullough apa died, probably sometime in the late 80s.

GRIFFONAGE:
this Toronto apa died about 1984.

MARAPA: (Maritimes apa)
